    How to get 'Special' Documents folder shortcut on desktop in Windows 7

    If you see that on desktop of Windows 7 or any other operating system under Windows has shortcut on desktop. These shortcuts have a small arrow on their side which shows that it is a shortcut to some other file or folder. But if you can change the registry entries and keys you can make it looks as if it is existent on the desktop itself. I have done it successfully for Internet explorer, but I am not getting it right for My Documents. The logo has appeared on desktop with no arrow on side, but whenever I click on it, I get an error which says, ‘Unspecified error’. This error occurs in explorer.exe. Can someone tell me how to get it right?

    I suggest that you try to get the key in HKCR\CLSID\{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}\ which contains data of My documents in following registry entry, HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\
    Also in this NameSpace registry key, you will have to add {450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103} as the sub key. Then go in following registry key, HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\
    Here you have to go to {450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103} key and set the value of DWORD to 0. I am not sure if it will work, but you can give it a try.

    I too have tried getting the special logos on the desktop many times and I have successful in many cases. I remember getting the My Documents on Desktop too. I remember that I had copied the logo of My Document directly from the original location to get it right. Here is the link from where I copied it,
    • C:\users\%username%\Desktop\Shortcut.exe
    • C:\users\%username%\Desktop\Documents.lnk
    • C:\users\%username%\Documents

    I hope you get it right too. I am not sure because I had did it long time back and it was just for fun.

    I tried the method that Xylina has mentioned in post above. At first I got things wrong and didn’t succeed in getting My Documents on desktop. After many attempts and some tweaking with registry keys and entries I found that you need to be in ownership of following registry keys,
    • HKCR\CLSID\{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}
    • HKCR\CLSID\{750fdf0e-2a26-11d1-a3ea-080036587f03}
    • HKCR\CLSID\{4a7ded0a-ad25-11d0-98a8-0800361b1103}
    • HKCR\CLSID\{596AB062-B4D2-4215-9F74-E9109B0A8153}

    Once you get ownership of them, you can easily get the above method right.
