Add or remove power user menu items in Windows 8 with Win+X Menu Editor

As we know Win+X "Start" menu is non-customizable part of Windows 8 but if anyone is interested in editing it then they can use this Win+X Menu Editor for Windows 8. It is supported by Windows 8 consumer preview as well as Windows 8 RTM version. Win+X Menu Editor will add simple shortcuts buttons like add shortcut, remove shortcut, add group ,remove group , restore defaults , apply and exit. Using Win+X Menu Editor one can add and remove item easily, can change display name of any item and sort then in order as well.

Hey thanks for sharing that, I have just found that there are different versions of Win+X Menu Editor, 1.0.0.2 seems to be the latest one but I am not getting a link from where I can download it? I also wanted to know if the above Win+X Menu Editor is specific for Windows 8 or it will work fine with windows 7 as well??

There are a number of sites from where you can download Win+X Menu Editor for Windows 8. This Win+X Menu Editor has been made for Windows 8 and it won’t work with windows 7. If you want then you can go through some articles for editing Windows 7 Start Menu over the web.

Guys if you are interested in adding Shutdown and Reboot to the Windows 8 Win+X Menu then you can refer to the below steps.
    • Click on Desktop tile on the Start screen and then Right-click on Desktop and select New Shortcut option.
    • Now enter below command in “Type the location of the item’ field and click on next.
    • shutdown.exe -s -t 00
    • Now name your shortcut as shutdown and click on finish, after that right click on shortcut and select Properties
    • Once shut down properties window gets opened click on shortcut tab and click on Change Icon. If you get a error message saying “The file has no icons, choose an icon from the list or specify a different file” then click on Browse button and select .exe, .dll, or .ico file which might be having many icons. You can select any symbol that you want and click on ok.
    • Now the selected icon will be displayed in shortcut tab under Properties dialog box, so just click on ok for closing it.
    • When you are done with all of the above steps then copy the shortcut and paste it in this directory: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
    • Here ProgramData directory is hidden directory and to get access to that you will have to check mark “hidden items” box. While pasting the shortcut in above mentioned directory if you get a dialog box saying “You will need to provide administrator permission to copy to this folder” then click on Continue and proceed.
    • Now you will see Shut down tile on the Start screen, if you don’t see it then you can do a search for it and then pin it to the Start screen.

You can add tiles for Restart, Lock Workstation, Hibernate, and Sleep in the same way using the commands below:
    Restart Computer: shutdown.exe -r -t 00
    Lock Workstation: rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation
    Hibernate Computer: rundll32.exe powrProf.dll,SetSuspendState
    Sleep Computer: rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0
Just make sure that you are using appropriate icons for then so that you don’t get confused and make them out easily.
