BootSkin is a program that lets you change the boot image windows. This same program brings a number of examples to use and allows download a lot of them. However, we can get our own custom boot image for use with bootskin windows very easily. What do you need?
    • bmp image size to 640x480 pixels and 16 colors (4 bit color depths)
    • bmp image to 22x9 pixel size and 16 colors to be used as the progress bar
    • Modify a configuration file: bootskin.ini, where we define the parameters that make the boot image that we are generating.

I am agree with the above post and to get that we use a graphic editor, Photoshop and a text editor, Notepad. Here are the steps for this to do:
    1. Open the image that we use for our purpose and convert it to 640x480.
    2. Change the image mode to indexed to put the number of colors that the image must have: 15 colors (+ white = 16). To do this we access the menu from Image / Mode / Indexed.
    3. Keep the image in bmp format from File / Save As / BMP image type.
    4. Go back to step 1 to 3 to do the same with the 22x9 image that will be our progress bar.

Now we have the 2 images that will compose our custom boot image.

I will never recommend you to play with the system image as you might be in a big trouble if you did any mistake. Anyways, if you have decided to do this then please take the backup of the original image so that it can be restored if anything goes wrong.

I have some suggestion for you that to work the image with a palette of 256 colors so that when you go to do the conversion to 16 is not a big loss of quality. If you have already worked in an image + 8-bit then you should first convert to 8 and then 4 with irfanview to have a better quality image.
