The visual styles could not be applied

I patched my computer (Vista) with the patch for SP1, but when I try to load a "visual style", the following error message with a red cross appears: "The visual styles could not be applied "...

In fact, as I do not know if SP1 was installed on my PC, I first installed the patch without SP1 (VistaGazz with the patch Files styles too), it did not already, then installed the patch for SP1 which still does not work. I then repatch with VistaGazz, and there I could not even open any window of "Themes" and "Visual Styles. I then repatch with patch for SP1, and then I can again open the last window, icons but I still can not change either the Visual Styles or Themes.

Precisely here, when I try to change a single theme the wallpaper has changed, but the visual style, same error message.

It Is there a solution to solve this problem? Otherwise, if there's other suggestion ...

The first thing is just to find out ...

Right-click the computer icon on the desktop, and then property.

If you made the backup of pacthed files then restore them.

Try the system restore it will undo changes made in the system till the date of restore point. or simply restore the backup of pacthed files. if your system still doesn't works properly then try a repair install by running the vista installation from within your Vista.

Make sure the themes service is enabled and that you used the correct version of uxtheme.dll.

Replace the files with following procedure:

    • Login as a Administrator.
    • Goto %systemroot%\System32
    • Right-click uxtheme.dll and click properties.
    • Take ownership of the file and close dialogs.
    • Do same for themeui.dll and shsvcs.dll
    • Right-click uxtheme.dll and click properties.
    • Give yourself (or group) Full Control permissions and close dialogs.
    • Do same for themeui.dll and shsvcs.dll.
    • Rename uxtheme.dll to uxtheme.old.
    • Rename themeui.dll to themeui.old.
    • Rename shsvcs.dll to shsvcs.old.
    • Copy downloaded patched files into %systemroot%\System32
    • Reboot your pc.
    • Done! enjoy
