Thumbnails on Desktop (Windows XP)

Hi,

I'd like my desktop to show my files there as thumbnails, not as icons. Like the explorer does. Windows Vista can do this, but XP cannot. Is there a tool, that can do it? Furthermor I'd like to hide the file names on my desktop too.
So the result I am aiming for is having my jpgs as thumbnails on my desktop, without file names.

I tried Xentient, but it makes square thumbnails, so it cuts off wider formats, still the file names. TweakUI cannot do it, D-Color makes not those big thumbnails and doesn't remove the filenames...

Maybe it's just a variable in the Windows Registry...

Do you have an idea?

miniMize has quite a bit of flexibility, more so than its rival. You can select from which corner of the screen you wish for your thumbnails to appear with the auto place feature. Naturally, you can still move them around by dragging. It will remember where it was placed for next time just for convenience. The auto place simply makes sure that when you minimize a window, the thumbnail is where you want it.

If your looking for hot key options, then your not left out either. Hot keys can be chosen for cycling thumbnail levels, minimizing all windows and show / hide thumbnails. If you want to keep to keyboard sometimes, you need not fear.

You can't hide the text from your desktop icons but you can delete the name or you can make it transparent.

Right click on the icon. Properties. General. Back space out the present name.
Type while holding the ALT key down 0160.
Then click ok.

In Explorer - Tools View
In third area down from the top, select Single Click and Underline Icon Titles...

Close Explorer and you're done.

To hide the icons on desktop -
if you are using the regular start menu(not the classic one) and you want to hide certain icons on the desktop but still have easy access to it, then do this :
  • First drag the particular icon (icon you want to hide) into the start menu and place it at the top so it is 'pinned to the start menu' -- along with i.e and o.e(both these items are pinned typically).
  • Right click on the desktop and scroll to 'arrange icons by' and then uncheck 'show desktop icons'
  • Now that will not appear on the desktop but you will still have access to it in the start menu.

Re: Thumbnails on Desktop (Windows XP)

Oh, interesting: you can hide the file name of thumbnails by holding SHIFT while choosing this type of file view or while entering a folder wich already has it set. Only works for thumbnail view... and only in the explorer... doesn't help me

The ALT-code is interesting too. But I have over 30 images wich habe to be renamed this way: SPACE, SPACESPACE, SPACESPACESPACE and so on, since you cannot have the same filename twice. So if I want to keep the alphabetical order, I have to name them accordingly...

miniMize is not, what I'm looking for. I don't wanna change the appearance of minimized windows.

A vista transform pack looks like too much transformation for me...

I found a way to change my 4:3 icons so that Xentient doesn't display them as a square. So I'll use this for my thumbnail view on the desktop. But I still need to hide the file name.

Macarenas, "In Explorer - Tools View
In third area down from the top" what it this area called? I don't kknow what you mean... but we talk about XP right?
