Change the size and quality of Thumbnails

The miniatures can get an overview of image files in Windows Explorer. We will see how to change their size and the quality of their compression.

The display of thumbnails of your images will be off the film and Miniatures. You can choose the mode in the View menu in Explorer. The size and compression quality of the miniatures can be modified by using two keys in the registry.
  • Open regedit (Start, Run ... and type regedit)

  • Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \Explorer

  • Create or edit the DWORD value named ThumbnailSize and give it a value between 32 and 256 by selecting the Decimal. This value corresponds to the size of thumbnails in pixels. The default is 96.

  • Create or edit the DWORD value named ThumbnailQuality and give it a value between 50 and 100 by selecting the Decimal. This value corresponds to the percentage of quality miniatures. The higher the value, the higher the quality is high. The default is 90.

  • If you want to make these changes for you and not for all users, you need only change these two keys in: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

  • These changes do not require restarting the computer, simply reopen the explorer or change directory to see the changes.

Notes:
  • It is important to bear in mind that the more these values are high, creating more miniatures require resources, the display for a directory containing many images will be longer.

  • To overcome possible problems of slowness in the creation of miniatures, Windows creates a hidden system file called Thumbs.db in the directory containing the images. This file more or less bulk to store thumbnails.

  • Note that if Thumbs.db can be deleted without a problem, Windows recreate in the future. To avoid this you can go to Tools, Folder Options ..., View tab and check the Do not cache thumbnails.

Do you have to create the two keys, or can you just create one
