I would like to introduce you to an application called Amnesty Generator.

Amnesty Generator is a free application that converts thousands of web gadgets and widgets - from dozens of sources - for use right on your Windows desktop.

While it was designed for Vista, it's not that surprising to find that it also works well on Windows 7.
Apart from iGoogle, other major widget providers like The New York Times, SpringWidgets, Widgetbox, and a slew of others are supported.
The conversion process is extremely fast and requires only a few simple steps:
    • copy and paste the HTML embed code,
    • enter a title (or use the one Amnesty automatically grabs),
    • select an image, and
    • click generate.

    NOTE -
There are a couple minor issues to note.
    • First, your image probably won't appear in the Widget gallery.
    • Second, the title links added to the widgets can be a bit unsightly, primarily when they're long.

Still, for the benefit of being able to add so many useful gadgets, it's a small price to pay.

Well in the near future, we will see some more quality gadgets in the Windows Live Gallery as Windows 7 nears completion.
Until then, Amnesty Generator provides a nice alternative. The program works with 32 and 64-bit versions of Vista and Windows 7, and there's also a Mac version available.

You can also add a specific iGoogle gadget to Google Desktop,
first open the 'Add gadgets' window by clicking the + button at the top of your sidebar,
then search for the name of the particular gadget.
If the gadget is listed in the search results, you can add it to Desktop by clicking its Add button.

Add gadgets from the iGoogle gadget directory
You can also add gadgets from the iGoogle gadget directory to your Desktop sidebar.
    Follow these steps:

    • Visit the iGoogle gadget directory and search for a specific gadget.
    • Click the gadget's name to open its description and details page.
    • In your browser's address bar, you will see a long URL.
Copy the portion of the URL in your address bar after "url=."
    • Open Desktop's 'Add Gadgets' window by clicking the + sign on your sidebar
    • Type http:// into the search box and paste the URL snippet you copied. If supported, the gadget will appear in the window.
    • Click Add to add the gadget to your sidebar.
