Drive Letter in Windows 7

On an article on the new Windows 7, I read the following.

Old bug with removable storage media resolved.

In Windows XP and Vista, there is a bug that if you have a mapped network drive, for example, on E:, and the device is the next available physical unit mapped as the removable media on E:. It then becomes impossible to access the content on the network drive. This bug is corrected in Windows 7.

Re: Drive Letter in Windows 7

When I tried Windows 7, I also had problems with drive letters. I had two mappings one for C and D. D drive was not always connected. From C I drove a backup to the D which went well. But if D were turned off and I put a USB memory as was the D. When I started the D to be able to run the backup disk was now the name E. But backup was set to drive to D, which now was a USB stick.

Will the Windows 7 to be able to lock to a particular unit?

I have not tested this but I would bet that there's no way to reserve units, unfortunately. It is still the case that devices connected to the next available drive letter.

Re: Drive Letter in Windows 7

I have 2 usb drives that are not permanently connected, I have manually assigned them drive letters M and T. They are always these names when I connect them, although the first free letter is F. To some, it is possible to assign a fixed letter if you want. Might add that I have done the same with usb drives!

Re: Drive Letter in Windows 7

I may well add that a "non sequence" unit may be so clearly the next available letter, so if you want a device to always have the same letter so select the appropriate one letter not likely to be automatically assigned a new unit! Units must not be in alphabetical order ... it is excellent to skip a few!
