The chkdsk or "Check Disk" utility is used in Windows to scan through your entire hard drive and find problems… it's like a lot like doing inventory… it's boring, but it has to be done sometimes. I recommend that you run through a check disk every month or two. To run Check disk in your Vista System, Follow this steps:-
1. Open the Start Menu.
2. Click on the Computer button.
3. Right click on your hard drive and click on Properties.
4. Click on the Tools tab.
5. Click on Check Now under the Error checking section.
6. Click on Continue in the UAC prompt.
7. Make sure both options are checked. The Automatically fix file system errors box will be checked by default.
8. Click on the Start button.
9. You will get a pop-up window saying, "Windows can't check this disk while it's use".
10. Click on the Schedule disk check button for chkdsk to run the next time you restart your computer.
Thank you for posting this, it was really clear and helped a lot, but I ran into some problems once I got to the disk check on startup.
