    How to Restrict or Unrestict Drive Access in Vista

    Hi ,, I am having a Windows vista system at my home. In a drive i have stored many of my important files and documents. Some times my family members or kids delete or do something wrong with that files. So, I wanted to restrict that drive. Can anybody help me out in this case ? Its urgent..

    Well, This problem is with many people who store their important office files and documents in their home PC. No need to worry you can restrict a drive easily with this steps:-

    1. Open the Start Menu.

    2. In the white line (Start Search) area, type regedit and press Enter.

    3. Click the Continue button for the UAC prompt.

    4. In regedit, go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

    5. To Restrict a Drive or Combination of Drives Access:-
      • In the right pane of Explorer, right click on a empty area and click on New and DWORD (32-bit) Value. Type NoViewOnDrive and press Enter.

      • Right click on NoViewOnDrive and click Modify.

      • Type in the drive option below in bold you want to set as restricted and click OK.

      • The registry will now look like this.

      • Go to step 7.


    6. 6. To Unrestrict All drives
      • In the right pane of Explorer, right click on NoViewOnDrive and click Delete.

      • Click Yes to confirm delete.



    7. 7. Close regedit.

    8. 8. Logoff and logon, or restart the computer to apply changes.

    You can restrict the drive with your important files with just few steps. If you are using the Vista Business, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions, then just go through this :-

    1. Open the Start Menu.


    2. In the white line (Start Search) area, type gpedit.msc and press Enter.


    3. Click Continue for the UAC prompt.


    4. In the left pane, click on User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, and Windows Explorer.


    5. In the right pane, right click on Prevent access to drives from My Computer and click Properties.


    6. To Restrict a Drive or Combination of Drives Access:-
    • Dot Enabled.

    • Click on the drop down arrow and select the drive or combination of drives option that you want to set as restricted.

    • Click on OK.



    7. Close the Local Group Policy Editor window.

    Thats it,, Your done.
