How to control the Desktop Cleanup Wizard?

    hello,

The Desktop Cleanup Wizard is poping-up every 60 seconds on my screen.
How should I stop this? I want to stop this permanently i.e even when I restart or shutdown, poping-up should be stopped.

Re: How to control the Desktop Cleanup Wizard?

The Desktop Cleanup Wizard runs every 60 days. It checks the last accessed date of the desktop shortcuts and displays a list of all the icons, with a check mark next to the name of each icon that has not been used in 60 days.
You can deselect any icon you want to keep on the desktop, and the Wizard removes the selected icons. The icons are not deleted, they are moved to a folder and you can put them back on the desktop if you want.
The folder that is automatically created the first time the Wizard removes icons is C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Desktop\Unused Desktop Shortcuts.

To Disable the Automatic Desktop Cleanup Feature

To stop the wizard from automatically running every 60 days:
    1. Right-click a blank spot on the desktop, and then click Properties to open the Display Properties dialog box.
    2. Click the Desktop tab.
    3. Click Customize desktop to open the Desktop Items dialog box.
    4. Click to clear the Run Desktop Cleanup Wizard every 60 days check box.
    5. Click OK twice to close the dialog boxes.

    This applies to:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional & Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

Re: How to control the Desktop Cleanup Wizard?

You can disable the desktop cleanup wizard function with a registry tweak. Many times we have items on our desktop that we do not use often but it does not necessarily mean that you want to remove them from your desktop.

This will prevent the desktop cleanup wizard from prompting you to remove any unused desktop and shortcut items automatically if you were to give the wizard permission.

Follow the steps below to disable the desktop cleanup wizard.

    i. Open your registry editor by going to Start Menu > Run > type in regedit click OK.

    ii. Find the path HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
Desktop\CleanupWiz using the folders on the left pane.

iii. Once you have located this path you must add a new entry called NoRun by right clicking an open area below the listed entries and then select NEW > DWORD value. Type in NoRun and press enter.

iv. Set the value of the NoRun entry to 1 by double clicking the NoRun entry and entering a 1 in the Value data field. Click OK.
    Value Key:
0 = Enable Desktop Cleanup Wizard
1 = Disable Desktop Cleanup Wizard

    v. Close the Registry Editor and Restart Windows for the changes to take effect.
