The search for local files has become the preoccupation of many software publishers have split their engine. Besides Apple on the latest version of Mac OS X, Google were the pioneers, but not necessarily the most interesting, their solution "googlienne" are fairly rudimentary and quickly overtaken by Copernic Desktop Search or Windows Desktop Search. But Google has not said its last word and its Google Desktop continues to evolve, with barely a final exit, following the beta is already the tip of his nose.
The main feature of Google Desktop is the Sidebar. The latter, also a search bar, gives you instant access to email, the latest news, the entries in your blogs or favorite RSS feeds or the latest web pages viewed on your computer. A slideshow of your photos, a pad and task list are also available. The navigation bar has been enriched with every version: the latest versions have seen the integration of Google Gadgets that you can place on your Sidebar but also on the desktop, any resemblance with Yahoo! Widget Engine or gadgets of the future "Sidebar" Windows Vista is obviously coincidental.
Google Desktop is Google simply adapted to your local content. The interface is somewhat put off users accustomed to more graphic solutions from Microsoft or Copernicus, but the familiar Google will be simply delighted to find the interface of their favorite engine, although it is questionable whether it is as relevant for search for files for web pages. The speed of research, however, is a positive point: once the files are indexed, a window pop up instantly displays the results as soon as you enter the first letters of your keywords, just like Apple's Spotlight engine.
Google is known for its many services like Gmail or Google Maps and Google Desktop integrates naturally with those, you can check your mail or search an address directly from the Sidebar.
