AVG Anti-spyware v7.5 - free version worth installing?

I can't find a comparison of the free versio vs. the paid version on their
site. I know the AVG AV has gotten bottom of the barrel reviews over at AV
comparatives, but how is the AVG Anti-Spyware program?

What happens after the 30 day trial period and it reverts to freeware?

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti.../lng/us/tpl/v5
- What you get with AVG Anti-Spyware Free
- What you do not get (Available only with commercial versions)

Can't answer that. I only tried it for one day. I found it to be very slow,
and not very useful.

It found lots of cookies on my wife's laptop, calling them medium-level
threats. Gee!

It claimed that the GNU/Cygwin "netcat" program is a threat. I don't think
it is.

I prefer Adaware. Others like Spybot. But this AVG item is none too swift.

YMMV.

When I first installed it, it found several spyware apps that were put there
by Compaq along with the operating system. None of the other malware
scanners found them. So I do run it every couple of days, just to be safe.

I have gotten more malware detections from A2 Trojan Scanner. That app
routinely finds something every couple of weeks, and is the app that I rely
upon the most.

Does it load any exe files at startup that will have to be deleted from the
registry (using one of the many utilities we have at our disposal or
services that will have to be stopped? I would like to run it on an "as
needed" basis only.

Just get the free version. It does not run all the time--only when you tell
it to.

The product used to be Ewido - which was considered the first or second
best trojan detector on the market (after TDS-3 which sadly was dumped by
the company producing it.) I don't know if AVG has screwed it up since,
but given the massive increase in the use of trojans and spyware, you
REALLY need to be running either it or A-Squared Free. I put A-Squared
Free on ALL my clients machines, and AVG Anti-Spyware on my home user
clients machines.

There really are no other options that I know of. The comparisons of AVG
AV is not relevant, as NONE of the AV systems - even the big boys like
Norton and McAfee - are clearing more than fifty percent of the spyware
and trojans out there these days. Avast and AVG AV are both quite adequate
for home users not afflicted with thousands of viruses a day (as opposed
to corporations who need better protection and can afford it). But spyware
and trojans from Web sites are quite another matter.

If anybody knows any anti-spyware AND anti-trojan tool that is free for
home users (and low-cost for small business) that does a better job than
A-Squared Free and AVG Anti-Spyware, let me know.
