| How to block a chunk of IPs?
Can someone please tell me how to block a whole bunch of IP from a certain ISP? If I were to block a range of IP, from aaa.bbb.ccc.000 to aaa.bbb.ccc. 255 --- How would I do that? I have heard about "HOSTS file" but I do not know how to block a whole range of IP using that "HOSTS file" thing. Can anyone please help? Thank you ! OS: Win 7 Home Basic |

The Sygate firewall does that also, which is why I am still using it. However Norton bought and killed it, so you can't get the professional version any more. You can still find the free version, but it only allows 10 rules. Rules can be complex, so you can include several ranges and/or individual ip addresses in one rule. Are you talking about Sygate personal firewall pro? The net is full of sources for that. you have some nice links??? http://www.oldversion.com/Sygate-Personal-Firewall.html |

But isn't it recommended not to use that firewall because it has a security exploit? I seem to remember reading that and is why I stopped using it long ago. |

Don't know, I don't keep up with stuff I don't use, hard enough to follow the sploits for what's currently onboard. |

Just a note: I believe the oldversions.com link posted is not for the pro version, just the free version. Never heard anything about such a problem. The real problem was that Norton bought it to kill it. Can't have a better product out there as competition, you know. |

nah, some old versions and the pro version isn't free. Most links are not for the pro version. Maybe rapidshare. one security exploit? A few more but it is still the best firewall for Win98SE. Sygate does work with WinXP. It is a standalone firewall and not like Norton, Comodo and all the others? part of a complete computer security system nightmare and you don't have to buy a new PC after an uninstall. Use a router for internet attacks and iptables for outbound control. Nope, I'm fairly certain it did have an exploit in it's last released version. |

I haven't used Win9x in ages and the last time I tried to install it it was NFG due to not having drivers for newer hardware. I thought iptables is Linux only? Why use iptables when the Windows firewall is fine and is only outbound rules anyway unless I go to advanced mode? |

you are correct. I thought that iptables had a Windows clone, but I couldn't find anything. how good the Windows firewall is is an item for comp.security.firewalls. There has been discussions in the past. |

Some problems are: if you use a local proxy for internet access Sygate's localhost checking is bad. Sometimes a blocked IP in Sygates advanced rules isn't always blocked. Application settings sometimes disappear. |

I've been using it exclusively since XP and haven't had any issues yet so it is good enough for me. I have a router with Linux software on it too. |
