| Difference between Norton Internet Security 2009 & Norton 360 version 3.0
Can someone tell me the difference between the two products in the "Subject" and your opinions on the two of them? I can't tell from Norton's own websites the real advantage of Norton 360 over ISS 2009. Does 360 have a two-way firewall? |

I would never use any "Security Suite", some parts are good, some parts are usable, some parts are not good, some parts are hogwash. I prefer to select my own software for the various functions, so I can have the best available (and in freeware). And as Norton and McAfee are now infamous for being "bloatware", I do not allow any software from the yellow and/or the red/black boxes on my PC, I prefer to keep my computer safe and sound. ;-) (but Norton Anti-Virus seems to show some improvement.) -- Fred W. I like your method of picking the best of what's out there - especially if it's free. Would you mind sharing with me what you currently consider the best? I'll probably go ahead and try them out......... One isn't very good & the other one is worse... :-( Norton (not to be confused with Symantec's own applications) products are usually not thought of well in the malware newsgroups. Once installed even their own purpose built uninstaller can't completely undo their presence, so a flatten & rebuild is called for by some when upgrading to much better antimalware protection. All Norton antimalware products have annual expiration dates! Using the "winver" command, exactly what OS are you supporting? -- 1PW |

I am certainly not an expert, but I try to keep up-to-date by reading in newsgroups like this one. AntiVirus - NOD32 Antivirus 4.0.437 http://www.eset.com/download/home This is the only paid security software I have, it is due for renewal in a couple of weeks, I consider buying again or making my "second opinion" av-program my "first opinion" program. - Avira Antivir Free 9.0.0.407 http://www.free-av.com/en/download/download_servers.php So far my "second opinion" on-request av-program, scheduled to scan twice a week. (I made scheduled jobs to update every two hours) - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) http://www.malwarebytes.org/ - SuperAntiSpyware (SAS) Free http://www.superantispyware.com/ Twice a week, manual update and full scan for both. - WinPatrol Free (just sitting there and watching) http://www.winpatrol.com/ http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html - Prevx, as a successor to BOClean (just warning) http://www.prevx.com/ - WindowsVista Firewall, with this for control http://sphinx-soft.com/Vista/index.html before I got WindowsVista 64-bit, I used OnlineArmor Free: http://www.tallemu.com/downloads.html (I am still waiting for a 64-bit version) If you use IE for a browser, I suggest SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html However I use Mozilla Firefox 3.5.2 as a browser, with NoScript. http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html http://noscript.net/ I also use Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 as e-mail client. http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-U...rbird/all.html In addition to MBAM and SAS, you could also use this: - a-squared Free 4.5 http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/ - SpywareTerminator http://www.spywareterminator.com/ Do you require more security software? Lots of software can be found. (and lots of opinions on this software can be found.) Usually people find their own combo of software they like. You have to find out by yourself, what works for you and what you like. Good luck! :-) -- Fred W. (NL) |

I wouldn't detract from anything that FredW has passed to you other than add that a good NAT router will be a very worthwhile addition if you don't already have one. As far as antimalware applications go, I'm using about 95% of what Fred uses. The applications we use have very good reputations and have stood up to many challenges. ...and most of it is freeware. Best wishes to you. -- 1PW |
