microsoft windows search protocol host

I am using Vista Ultra on my HP dv7 notebook. It often takes several
minutes, often more than 5 minutes, to start up. When I check task
manager the search protocol host is using about 50 % of CPU time. It
seems whenever the computer slows down it is running. Is it an
essentail part of Windows? Is it possible to close it down?

Thanks
Mike

Why would you ask this question in an AV NG?

You should post to MS.Public.Windows.Vista.General at
msnews.microsoft.com which can be reached via MS Communities using Vista
Mail on the Vista machine or via your Web browser.
