| no access to mapped drive with offline files setting over WAN
I have 2 questions regarding GPO for FolderRedirection for My Documents on XP Sp2: 1. We are testing out the gpo for folder redirection and offline files for our remote users over a 512 k MPLS WAN. In order to speed up the access to documents, I added the netcache registry setting for GoOfflineOnSlowLink=1 so our users would be using offline files. However, we now are getting reports that they cannot access their mapped drive because they are offline. What will happen if I change the netcache value to 0? How can I configure the settings for GPO to speed up access to files while continuing access to mapped drives? 2. Also, I am wondering if there is a GPO to schedule sync during off hours? |

Marjorie, In XP I don't know of a way to pick and choose what is offline at a point in time. Your option would be to not make the mapped drive locations available offline (in the Sharing properties on the server), so over a slow link they would still be online. In Vista you have much more control of going "offline" selectively. In XP there is not an option to schedule the sync in Group Policy, but the user can do it in the Synchronisation properties. You can synchronise manually, or you can set it to synchronise when idle and every xx minutes. I dare say you could implement this through the registry but I haven't tried. Thanks for your quick response. I will check with our network admin if it is possible to change the "common" share properties as you suggest. Am I correct in thinking that the netcache value referenced will force the workstation into offline mode all the time? | Re: no access to mapped drive with offline files setting over WAN
The Offline Files feature is primarily concerned with when the files are simply not available, e.g. when you are offline. But you can set the Slow Link detection so that a slow link is assumed to be offline for the purposes of Offline Files, even tho it is not in fact offline. If you Disable slow link detection, then the files are considered online until they are truly not connected at all, at which point you can use the files in the offline cache. | Re: no access to mapped drive with offline files setting over WAN
Anthony -- I set up a test environment with the mapped "common" share set to "Do not make available offline", but since it is on the same server as the My Docs folder redirection share, it is not available at all. It looks like this is true since it is the same server, as I can get to shares on a different server while on the slow link. Is this correct, or do I need to reboot the server in order for the offline setting to take place? Thanks again for your help! | Re: no access to mapped drive with offline files setting over WAN
The thing I would try is to re-initialise the offline cache on the client (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/230738). Then try again. Caching is a Share property rather than a server property, so I would be surprised if the My Docs redirection/offline setting made a difference to the mapped drive. Hope that helps, Anthony, http://www.airdesk.co.uk "Marjorie_VFB" <MarjorieVFB@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:C81ED2C0-3288-49DD-9ACD-76B2E4C6DCA2@microsoft.com... > Anthony -- I set up a test environment with the mapped "common" share set > to > "Do not make available offline", but since it is on the same server as the > My > Docs folder redirection share, it is not available at all. | Re: no access to mapped drive with offline files setting over WAN
After changing the "\\remotefsp\common" share to not be available to offline files, reinitializing the cache on the client, I am getting the same behavior. Slow link goes offline and all shares on "remotefsp" server are offline -- My Docs, common, etc. It looks like our main solution will be to have My Docs on a separate server from the "common" share at this point. Thanks again for your suggestions and insight. "Anthony [MVP]" wrote: > The thing I would try is to re-initialise the offline cache on the client > (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/230738). | Re: no access to mapped drive with offline files setting over WAN
Hi Marjorie, That's interesting and I must say I am a little surprised. The slow link detection would mark the server as "slow", but since the Share is not available offline I would have expected you still to be able to connect to it directly. When you connect to the Share, does it say it is unavailable, or offline? The share does not have any notice, but there are no files or folders -- it just looks like an empty window. If I am looking at a share on a different server that is not on \\remotefsp, then I can see all the files and folders. Of course I do not have the right click option to "Make available offline" on that share either. Hope that helps. | Re: no access to mapped drive with offline files setting over WAN
I think you are right, its not going to work unless the shared drive is on a different server. I guess if you connected with the \\[IP_Address]\Share it would work because it would be seen as a different server (not that you would want to do that, but just for testing). Anthony, http://www.airdesk.co.uk "Marjorie_VFB" <MarjorieVFB@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:250CDA92-E6A5-4286-8CC4-1972C6EACFC8@microsoft.com... > The share does not have any notice, but there are no files or folders -- > it > just looks like an empty window. Anthony -- when I map out to the \\IP_Address\Share I do not lose the data in the folder. Very interesting! | Re: no access to mapped drive with offline files setting over WAN
So you could create a DFS link to the Shared folder, which is not available offline, and map the drive to that. Then when the physical server is marked as offline, the mapped drive to the DFS path will not be. Anthony, http://www.airdesk.co.uk "Marjorie_VFB" <MarjorieVFB@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:611BE3EE-3FB5-4633-AB4B-04FABB8EF826@microsoft.com... > Anthony -- when I map out to the \\IP_Address\Share I do not lose the data > in > the folder.
