| Transfer computer and user accounts from one domain to another
Good day NG we're in the process of migrating an old windows 2000 to a new windows 2008 domain. since the schema of the existing domain is inconsistent and kinda corrupt, our idea is, to transfer computer and user accounts from the old to the new domain. what we have in mind is, to create a new domain and connect to the existing one, then transfer computer and user accounts from existing to new. BUT, we don't know how we can set it up to get that working. can someone point us in a direction? or share some thoughts with us? big thanks in advance Christian |

hi bbw thanks for your response. so you migrated the computer accounts from one domain to another using one or both of these tools - but how did you 'make the workstations understand' that they nolonger belongs to domainold.local but to domainnew.local? i think you had to execute some code on every workstation that changed some setting somewhere .. am i wrong? thanks and kind regards Christian |

I had my main domain abc.com and it ran W2K3. I had a seperate domain overseas say xyz.com, not connected. Both had seperate Exchange 2003 systems. We needed to merge. on xyz, I used CSVDE to export user accounts and GAL, includsing x400 and X500 address to a CSV file. I noted the shares & loginscripts. Exported the Exchange data to PSTs. I then shutdown all the servers. Then i reinstalled the OS creating a new domain in an existing forest. Made the DNS server, WINS, DHCP, etc. Reinstalled the servers to the new domain. Reinstall Exchange to the abc org.. Massaged the csv file to put back the users. 50 PC, removed from old domain and added to new domain, login as user and put config outlook. Put back the shares and rights. print was tcpip. 3 people done on a 3 day weekend. there may be better ways, but this worked and I knew what i was doing... good luck... |

You could use Active Directory Migration Toolkit v3. The guide is here: https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...displaylang=en It is built to assist in the transfer of AD objects from one domain to another, including Exchange objects. If you decide to go that route you will also need to set up a Trust between the two domains whilst you transfer the objects -- Paul Bergson MVP - Directory Services MCTS, MCT, MCSE, MCSA, Security+, BS CSci 2008, 2003, 2000 (Early Achiever), NT4 Please no e-mails, any questions should be posted in the NewsGroup This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. |
