Go to the Exchange Advanced tab in ADUC and click on custom attributes. The first and last two or three (I believe) are used if you run an upgrade (Or so I have been told). I would start at 4 and stop at 12 but these are all available to you. -- Paul Bergson MVP - Directory Services MCT, MCSE, MCSA, Security+, BS CSci 2008, 2003, 2000 (Early Achiever), NT4 |

| Re: Custom AD attribute - [WP]
Think carefully about whether you want to use a string-based attribute for this type of information though. In many cases, it is more useful to store this type of data in a DN-syntax attribute with an appropriate multivalued backlink attribute as well. That makes it easier to follow users around as they change names and locations in the directory. The downside of such an attribute is that if the object pointing to the original hiring manager is deleted, in a linked attribute the reference to that object would also be deleted. As such, you might run the risk of losing who the original hiring manager was during deprovisioning. It depends on what you are trying to accomplish. I also have a bias against using the Exchange extension attributes as I think it is better to create your own schema with a name that has some semantic meaning. The downside is that you have to extend the schema which some people fear, but it actually doesn't take any additional space until the attribute is populated. Creating UI to manage schema extensions is always a bit of a pain to deal with, although ADUC in 2K8 server includes a tab that shows the ADSI Edit view of things. :) It is one solution. Joe K. |
