Rename domain name, user profiles

My comany consists of a very simple AD structure, we have only 1 forest, 1
root domain, 1 W2K DC, 1 W2K3 DC, a few member servers, Exchange 2000 and
2007 coexisting, and 200 users. I have to rename our current domain from
companyR.com to companyR.local. I know it's doable either using RENDOM
(rename) or ADMT (migration).

My question is, if i use RENDOM to rename my domain, what would happen to my
users' profiles? To be more specific, once I rename my domain, do I have to
unjoin then rejoin all servers and desktops individually? another lead-in
question is, would every user gets a new profile when they logon to the new
domain (I consider the companyR.local as a new domain, correct me if I am
wrong)? If that's what would happen, do you have any tools to easily
reconfigure user profile, such as outlook?

Thanks

Domain rename is only possible when you have the FFL at 2003 level, since
you have a 2K DC that action isn't possible.

yes, I understand that. I just skipped listing from step one to end. That
being said, I know I will have to DCPROMO my W2K DC to member server making
my AD a native W2K3 AD environment, then I will raise the domain FFL to 2003
native.

My main concern is how I can easily handle my users' profiles.

I want to make sure that it is a clear "NO" for domain rename tool to work
in AD which Exchange 2000 server is deployed. So, I don't even need to think
about this path.

What would you suggest me on changing my domain name? Would ADMT work in my
environment (AD with Exchange 2000)?

Re: Rename domain name, user profiles

Also
domain rename is not supported in an Active Directory forest in which
Exchange 2000 Server is deployed

You shouldn't have any problems with profiles, unless you're mapping them to
the FQDN that will be renamed, but there're many other things to consider,
like exchange 2000, etc...

Before doing anythin I suggest that you setup a lab and test it more than
once, document everything and create a good rollback plan,of course also
reead all MS documentation for this subject.

Re: Rename domain name, user profiles

I also have a domain name to rename. I need to change the suffix to .lcl and mine is much simpler. I have a single win2003 domain controller, no exchange servers, and about 20 workstations.

I was unclear about the user profiles. After the domain rename is done, will i have to join each workstation to the new domain or will the domain controller tell the workstations the domain name has changed? I absolutely do not want to reconfigure 20 workstations. The profiles are not stored on the server.
