| Replies sometimes picking up the wrong address
Hi We have recently re-installed our email server (clean installation) and now some replies are going to the wrong email address causing bounce backs. Our setup is as follows AD Controller running Windows Server 2003 R2 Mail server running Windows 2003 R2 SP2 and Exchange 2003 SP2. Users logon is in the format Firstname and Initial SMTP Email address is firstname.lastname@example.com Sometimes when you reply to an email it is sent to userlogon@example.com instead of the SMTP address. The person who set the Exchange server up previously has now left and I can't contact them to find out how it was originally setup. We had to reinstall as a lot of the functionality had been deleted/corrupted years ago. Any help would be gratefully received. Thanks TJ |

Well, that *is* an SMTP address - you just mean, not to the user's *primary* SMTP address. Check out what's listed as the default/primary in your recipient policy....I'd expect it be %g.%s@example.com (given.surname@example.com). Check that, and check that all your users have the tickbox checked for 'update via recipient policy' in their ADUC email addresses tab. See http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;285136 for more info on that. Users can send out only as the default address defined in their mailbox - if you were making any changes to your recipient policies, etc., it's possible that the default policy (which is just @example.com - yielding alias@example.com) may have kicked in for some or all of your users, for some time. I would personally have *both* in there with the default you wish. Note - there's no need to post this to an AD group as it's an Exchange issue. > The person who > set the Exchange server up previously has now left and I can't > contact them to find out how it was originally setup. | Re: Replies sometimes picking up the wrong address
Hi TJ, we might need a little more clarification before we can say for sure what is going on, but here are some things that come to my mind. So if replies are coming in from the internet to the address userlogon@example.com , that would indicate to me that at some point that userlogon@example.com address was their primary smtp address. Are users getting NDR's when they reply to these incorrect addresses? If so, to fix it you should probably add userlogon@example.com as a secondary address for your accounts. That could be accomplished by modifying your existing recipient policy to add the secondary address or using admodify to update the accounts in bulk. When you uninstalled the mail server did you wipe out the Exchange Organization in the process, or did you just install the server over the top of itself? -- Chad M3 PostMasters M3PostMasters@nospam.m3tg.com M3 Technology Group www.m3postmasters.com "TJ" <noreply@nothere.com.de.fr> wrote in message news:OVq5GwaYIHA.6140@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... > Hi > > We have recently re-installed our email server (clean installation) and > now some replies are going to the wrong email address causing bounce > backs. Thanks Lanwench this has sorted it and apologies for cross posting - I was unsure whether this was an Exchange issue or AD. Thanks once again TJ "Lanwench [MVP - Exchange]" <lanwench@heybuddy.donotsendme.unsolicitedmailatyahoo.com> wrote in message news:eTog2%23aYIHA.2268@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... > TJ <noreply@nothere.com.de.fr> wrote: >> Hi >> >> We have recently re-installed our email server (clean installation) >> and now some replies are going to the wrong email address causing >> bounce backs.
