That is NOT the preferred way to remove a DC -- only how you must do it if you have a failure of a DC when you have no choice. (i.e., "metadata cleanup".) In generaly you should remove DCs by running DCPromo while they are still working and online. > i want to know can i apply the same procedure for first domain controller? Make sure you have GCs and transfer the 5 FSMO roles (3 roles for a child or domain which is not the root forest domain.) Make sure you have DNS available. And WINS Server if you have more than one subnet. In a single domain forest EVERY DC should be a GC. Usually for small domains every DC can best run DNS Server also (and maybe WINS server if you have more than one subnet.) -- Herb Martin, MCSE, MVP http://www.LearnQuick.Com (phone on web site) |

Running DCPROMO on your machine will demote it gracefully and also transfer the OM roles. You also have to think about DNS and WINS, etc. though. Have a look at these: What you should think about when removing a DC from the domain -- http://www.msresource.net/content/view/23/47/ How to gracefully remove a DC -- http://www2.msresource.net/content/view/61/56/ -- Paul Williams Microsoft MVP - Windows Server - Directory Services http://www.msresource.net | http://forums.msresource.net |
