| Demoting a Domain Controller with DNS / DHCP installed
Hi, Our environment has 15 domain controllers in 1 domain, these are spread across the country. Each DC has DNS and DHCP installed. I am demoting a Domain controller, Q1 - Do i need to remove DNS DHCP before demoting or not? I have tried Demoting already (WITH dns / dhcp STILL installed )and received the following: The operation failed because: Failed to configure the service NETLOGON as requested - The wait operation time out Is this related to DNS and/or not being removed? |

Technically, there is nothing you need to do, but.... [If the above is inaccurate, I expect to be corrected :) ] 1. Are clients using this DC for DNS name resolution? If so, they will need to be updated to use another DNS server. 2. Are DNS servers performing zone transfers from this DNS server? If so, they will need to be altered. 3. Are clients directed to the server for DHCP services, via routers and switches? (bootp helper) If so, again, changes are needed. neil "Sparks" wrote: > Hi, > > Our environment has 15 domain controllers in 1 domain, these are spread > across the country. Demoting this server should not care about dns or dhcp. If the dns is AD integrated you will lose the dns services for this server (On the client side) so make sure you are pointing to another dns server. I would run some diagnostics against your AD it doesn't sound like there is much info to provide feedback on your problem. Go to http://www.pbbergs.com/ select the downloads link and then click on DCDiag and NetDiag link. It will help you run diagnostics against your dc. -- Paul Bergson MCT, MCSE, MCSA, CNE, CNA, CCA "Sparks" wrote: > Hi, > > Our environment has 15 domain controllers in 1 domain, these are spread > across the country. I'm sure it's obvious, but the URL below is broken. use http://www.pbbergs.com and as for the shameful plug, well... nice UI Paul :) neil "Paul Bergson" wrote: > Demoting this server should not care about dns or dhcp. Sparks, What you might also want to try to incorporate in your 'dcpromo procedure' is to not point that DC to itself anymore in the TCP/IP Configuration information as far as DNS info is concerned. But that only helps to make sure that DNS records and the like are properly removed (so you do not have to go in manually). -- Cary W. | Cannot demote a DC
Hi To demote the DC make sure you go into users and computers on the DC you want to demote and right click the domain. Select 'Connect to Domain Controller' and select the DC you want to demote. In other words ensure the DC you want to demote is what you are connecting to when using AD users and computer. Thanks Dave |
