Group policy 2k8:an old software (test) package is causing GPO err

At one point in time, forwhatever reason, there was a package "tested" in the
default domain policy.. (which also meant it got pushed to servers
potentially)...

I removed this from group policy a long while ago.. now, as i'm preparing to
goto 2008 R2, i ran dcdiag and noticed a ton of errors.. like these:

An Warning Event occurred. EventID: 0x00000065

Time Generated: 01/29/2010 12:25:17

Event String:

The assignment of application Wise InstallTailor 6.0 from policy
Default Domain Policy failed. The error was : %%1274

An Warning Event occurred. EventID: 0x00000065

Time Generated: 01/29/2010 12:30:21

Event String:

The assignment of application Wise InstallTailor 6.0 from policy
Default Domain Policy failed. The error was : %%1274

I also see some errors like this in the event viewer..

Now when i run rsop.msc.. i see its appliied the default policy.. i can
right click edit the policy and i DO NOT see this application under
computer\software.. However, if i just drill down in RSOP's main view.. i DO
see it (with the exclaimation on the computer section)..

The error is:
Software Installation did not complete policy processing because a system
restart is required for the settings to be applied. Group Policy will
attempt to apply the settings the next time the computer is restarted.

I've tried running gpupdate /force and rebooted this DC.. to no avail (i
think i've seen this gpo error on other machines too)

How do i get rid of this? I dont know what else to try

Thanks

Hello markm75g,

Did you try to edit the rsop.msc setting or did you open the GPO(Default
Domain Policy) itself with GPMC? Not really clear for me, in RSOP you cannot
edit the GPO.

In RSOP on the DC, i chose edit on "default domain policy", it shows the
correct and up to date policy IE: this app installer isnt listed under
software.. but if you drill down in RSOP itself.. you see the installer
listed etc..

Hello markm75g,

As said before in RSOP you can not edit the GPO, please use GPMC and open
the default domain policy, then check again.

Its the same in GP management.. i see the newer policies, where there is
nothing listed under software in the default domain policy.

Group policy 2k8:an old software (test) package is causing GPO error

I dont know that doing this will solve anything:

n a GPO that applies to that computer, add the following setting:

* Computer Settings
o Administrative Templates
+ System
# Logon
* Always wait for the network at computer
startup and logon - Enabled

After you set that (and allow the GPO to replicate if you're in a multi-DC
environment), do a "gpupdate /force /boot" on the subject PC. It will reboot
and you should see the software installation occur.

The "Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon" slightly
slows down the startup and logon because all GPO extensions are allowed to
process, but the upside is that all GPO extensions are allowed to process.

As, that installer no longer exists.. it was never attempted on this DC (new
dc's)..
