Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your computernetwork. (The specified domain either does not exist or could not becontacted. ). Group Policy processing aborted.

Hi

This problem has been driving me nuts for two days now. I'm receiving
the following error in the event log when a user tried to login.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1054
Date: 10/01/2010
Time: 18:37:28
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: PC6
Description:
Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your computer
network. (The specified domain either does not exist or could not be
contacted. ). Group Policy processing aborted.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I've done a lot of research, I've changed the reg settings to
increase
the netlogon time etc, changed network cards (i'm currently using a
Intel card).

The computers are joined to the network, the users can login but that
error keeps appearing - stopping the policy from being applied.

I have a Windows 2008 Standard server and the client machines are Win
XP SP3.

Can anyone help?

Thanks
Lee

I responded in the networking newsgroup. I also cross-posted my response to
both this group (AD group) and the networking group. If you can, and not
sure if Google Groups supports it, try using the cross-posting feature to
send it to multiple groups simulatenously instead of separate posts. This
way we can collaborate to come up with a solution, and resposnses go
automatically to both groups simultaneously. Otherwise you will be manually
checking both groups for responses.

Hello Lee,

Let's start to exclude DNS as a major problem, please post an unedited ipconfig
/all from the DC/DNS server and the XP machine.

Best regards
