Global Data Catolog/Exchange

Folks

I am having problems installing exchange on one of my servers. I had exchange 07 installed but it would not load in the MMC so I uninstalled it. Tried to reinstall it and get a message that the Global Data Catolog cannot be found.

I have aslo noticed that I cannot access Sharepoint which is installed on the same server.

Neither is in production yet but plan was to go live this week.

I have uploaded 2 files from the DC:
ntfrsutl.txt - result fo running ntfrsutl ds on the DC
dcdiag - result of running dcdiag on the DC

I have also included the IP config files from the server giving problems and the DC.

remove the loopback IP on the domain controller and point it to itself.

Hello abarber,

On the DC disable all unused NICs. Also better use the real ip address insterad
of the loopback, even if that isn't the solution to your problem.

Exchange should run on a member server for it's own.

If you don't use IPv6 disable it:

There is a known problem when installing Exchange on Windows server 2008
if IPv6 isn't disabled.

I agree. I came across this issue back in March with a customer that has
Exchange 2007 on Windows 2008. It was resolved by disabling IPv6 on the
Exchange servers, as well as disabling the TCP Chimney function.

Also, the multiple interfaces on the DC are definitely problematic, and the
loop back (as the other responder mentioned), should only point to the
actual IP (192.168.0.200), and not the loopback. I feel the DC was setup,
then left at default, hence why the loopback shows up.

That's a good article by Paul regarding disabling IPv6. Also, here is

Thanks for the quick responses.

Will take your advice on board.

Discovered I was using the wrong version of Exchange hence it failed with the could not find global catalog error. Installed the correct version with SP1 and the installation has gone Ok.

It was the Exchange Management Console that would not open that caused the initial problem. Hence I reinstalled the software. Was still able to retrieve the accounts setup initially but there is no emails in them anyway.

Will take the other advice on board and disable the NICs and IPv6 and remove the loopback.

After installing Exchange you have to create the mailboxes for existing user
accounts yourself. And the easiest way for new users is o use the Exchange
server, so mailoboxes can be created during user account creation, see for

We have our email accounts setup on a hosting service.

The plan is to get exchange up and running. I had setup accounts on the mail server ready for the transfer of the emails from the hosted site. These still existed when I reinstalled Exchange.

They would have existed because the mailbox database still existed, and the
users' AD attributes still pointed to the mailboxes, which a reinstall
doesn't change.
