Domain rename in windows 2008 parent can child

Hi,

I have two root domain controller sat.au.local. The first root dc that
contains all 5 roles has a CA Authroity installed and configured.

I have two child domain controller sf.sat.au.local

I have an exchange 2007 which is under sf.sat.au.local and an edge server
2007.
I have file server running windows 2008 and two other machine running
windows 2003 part of the child domain.

How do I perform a Domain renamed in this case?

Re: Domain rename in windows 2008 parent can child

As far as I know there have been no major changes when moving from 2003 to
2008. So I would follow the step by step instructions (Trial in test
first!!!) as well as take two backups on two seperate dc's before
proceeding.

For 2008 steps outlined
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...69(WS.10).aspx

Do a search on Microsoft's website (I couldn't get the url) for the
following document it goes through the steps for 2003 and like I said I
haven't heard of much changes. Make sure you use the 2008 rendom tool and
validate you have met all the prerequistes. The tools should be available
on your 2008 server cd.
Rename Procedure on Microsoft -> Domain-Rename-Procedure.doc

Jorge has some links on this as well, but I haven't looked them over, but he
is as good as they get on info.

Domain Renames can either be tricky or straightforward. If Exchange 07 is
involved, it won't be possible. Take a look at my blog on this. I hope it
helps explain the nuances.

You know I read the tech article before I posted it and Ace you are right on
Exchange 2007 won't work. I don't know how I missed that.

Chris sorry for the confusion, as Ace pointed out you can't migrate Server
2008 with Exchange 2007 at this time.

Re: Domain rename in windows 2008 parent can child

Hello chris,

As already mentioned, domain rename with an Exchange 2007 server is not supported.
What you can do is to export all mailboxes to .pst files uninstall exchange,
rename the domain, install exchange again and import the mailboxes.

But i suggest to test this in a lab before going into production environment.

Best regards

Hopefully 2010 supports it. :-)
