| Joining XP desktop to domain, can't rename computer
Some desktops when I join them from WORKGROUP to domain, it went through the wizard fine and if I specify a new computer name, at the end of the wizard, it will tell me the computer is joined using the old name because the password couldn't be updated? I have to run the wizard the 2nd time after the reboot to use the name I wanted to use. What could be causing this? Thanks. |

If I check the DC, it's showing the old PC name, but if I refresh again in about 20 seconds or so, it's showing the name I wanted to use. But the desktop is still using the old name. We have multiple DCs and these computers are in remote office with no DC, it's VPN to our main office for authentication. Change name, reboot, join to domain and reboot. This is the Microsoft recommend series of steps. -- Paul Bergson MVP - Directory Services MCTS, MCT, MCSE, MCSA, Security+, BS CSci 2008, 2003, 2000 (Early Achiever), NT4 Microsoft's Thrive IT Pro of the Month - June 2009 http://www.pbbergs.com Please no e-mails, any questions should be posted in the NewsGroup This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. Hello Newbie, Rename and joining to the domain is not recommended. Make a 2 step option of it.
