How do restore AD 2003 : procedure

Hello

I'm looking for some informations about AD restauration when one DC is
crashed.

This is my configuration :

2 dc under Win2003 SP2 : dc1 and dc2.
- dc1 hold all the FSMO tasks.
- dc1 and dc2 are both Global Catalog.
- DNS is integrated in AD.
- I have 2 DHCP servers : one part on DC1 and the other on DC2.
- No wins.

I wonder how to restore AD (set a procedure) if my DC1 is crashed.
Not only AD but all the OS. That is to say I have to reinstall Windows 2003
from scratch after formating my disk or change it.

So this is my steps. Can you help me to say if something is wrong in this
procedure :

1- I Format the disk or install the new one.
2- Installation of Windows 2003 from the CD.

3- I give the same NAME (netbios) and IP address during installation than
the old dc1
-->for example : dc1.mycompany.lan

4- I don't join the domain. The new installation stay in workgroup.

5- I apply the SP2 pack. Not the months microsoft hotfixs.

6- I get my backup of dc1 from my network : .bak file created with ntbackup.

7- I do a restoration of all the system from ntbackup : C:\ and SystemState.
--> I don't need to restart Windows in Active Directory restoration Mode
because AD does not exist yet on dc1.

8- As soon as the restoration is finished, I restart the server.

So, do you think that, I get back my dc1 with this procedure.
All the FSMO, DNS and DHCP ?

Is dc1 going to do a replication with dc2 ? Is it a "normal replication" so
dc1 will get AD informations from dc2 ?

Thanks a lot for your help.
Fabrice

Hello Fabrice,

Choose "Restoring a Domain Controller Through Reinstallation" from:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...72(WS.10).aspx

Here are all steps described.

Those steps look okay to me. You should be able to get DC1 working again
with that. Check Meinolf's suggestion, though to get additional tips and
tricks.

This would be an awesome thing to test in a test environment with two
lab DCs - just to get into the procedure and learn how to perform those
steps. You certainly don't want to trial&error around if your production
DC's down.

Cheers,
Florian

Re: How do restore AD 2003 : procedure

Just make sure the SP applied prior to the restore (Unless it is a bare
metal restore) is the exact same one as the that resides on the backup.
Otherwise it will fail.

Re: How do restore AD 2003 : procedure

Also, if your DEAD DC1 had SYSVOL on D: and NTDS on E: and then NTDSLOGS on
Z:, then the new installation must have those volumes already created and
formated with the correct drive letters before the restore start, and make
sure the SYSVOL volume is formatted as NTFS. Also, since all roles were on DC
1, I am sure that you would at least nead to seize/(Force transfer) them to
DC2, especially the PDCe. If you have to seize all the roles, then when DC1
in restores and rebooted, (A 2003 trick) DC1 will look an see it is no longer
the Roles owner and not advertise as any of them. NICE HEY, in AD 2000 you
could never switch the DC1 on ever, you would need to perform a new inst and
the dcpromo in
