| Migration from 2000 AD to New windows 2008 Server
Hi, I need help of how to migrate my 2000 Domain to 2008 Domain here is the network: 1- First Physical server with Windows 2000 Server ( AD, DNS, DHCP, print Server ) 2- Second Physical Server with Windows 2003 and Exchange installed 3- Third Physical server with New windows 2008 Server installed. We would like to move the domain from 2000 Server to the new 2008 server, so the new server will be the domain controller ( 2008 ), moving all roles ( DHCP, DNS, Print ) Also we need to connect the Exchange server to the new 2008 Server domain. Thanks |

Hello Kal-H, Here are some basic suggestions -Have atleast a valid System state backup available -Make sure your environment is healthy ( run repadmin /showreps, dcdiag /test:replications) -Prepare your domain to accept W2K8 machine by uograding your schema (Insert the w2k8 disk into the schaema master, run adprep/forestprep, wait for replication to complete, insert w2k8 disk into infrastructure master run adprep /domainprep, adprep /gpprep wait for it to replicate accross) -DCpromo w2k8 server and add to your domain and install DNS -Transfer roles to w2k8 DC -Migrate DHCP, print For exchange, it will be best to post to exchange forum -- Isaac Oben [MCTIP:EA, MCSE] "Kal-H" <KalH@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:1C37CDDA-E704-41E1-A250-3C243A784F1E@microsoft.com... > Hi, > > I need help of how to migrate my 2000 Domain to 2008 Domain > here is the network: > > 1- First Physical server with Windows 2000 Server ( AD, DNS, DHCP, print > Server ) > 2- Second Physical Server with Windows 2003 and Exchange installed > 3- Third Physical server with New windows 2008 Server installed. > > We would like to move the domain from 2000 Server to the new 2008 server, > so > the new server will be the domain controller ( 2008 ), moving all roles ( > DHCP, DNS, Print ) > > Also we need to connect the Exchange server to the new 2008 Server domain. > > Thanks |

If 2003, simply change the RUS to the new domain controller. The directory services portion will automatically discover the new GC, Config and Domain Controllers services. Make sure you change ALL DNS entries (static and DHCP Scope) to the new domain controller for DNS IP address. Also, it is advised with any AD installation, to have a minimal of two domain controllers per domain. This will give you fault tolerance, for what would happen if the only DC you had were to go down and will take time to recover, if it is recoverable? If you had two, your users and groups will still be intact, change the RUS, change the DNS settings, and your users and production is fine. Otherwise they will be down until you get the box back up and running. Ace |

| Re: Migration from 2000 AD to New windows 2008 Server
Hello Kal-H, In Exchange just configure the new DC in the Recipients update service. For the 2008: - On the old server open DNS management console and check that you are running Active directory integrated zone (easier for replication, if you have more then one DNS server) - run replmon from the run line or repadmin /showrepl(only if more then one DC exist), dcdiag and netdiag from the command prompt on the old machine to check for errors, if you have some post the complete output from the command here or solve them first. For this tools you have to install the support\tools\suptools.msi from the 2000 or 2003 installation disk. - run adprep /forestprep and adprep /domainprep and adprep /rodcprep from the 2008 installation disk against the 2000 schema master, with an account that is member of the Schema admins, to upgrade the schema to the new version (44), you can check the version with "schupgr" in a command prompt. - Install the new machine as a member server in your existing domain - configure a fixed ip and set the preferred DNS server to the old DNS server only - run dcpromo and follow the wizard to add the 2008 server to an existing domain, make it also Global catalog. - if you are prompted for DNS configuration choose Yes. If not, install DNS role after promotion. - for DNS give the server time for replication, at least 15 minutes. Because you use Active directory integrated zones it will automatically replicate the zones to the new server. Open DNS management console to check that they appear - if the new machine is domain controller and DNS server run again replmon, dcdiag and netdiag (copy the netdiag from the 2003 to 2008, will work) on both domain controllers - Transfer, NOT seize the 5 FSMO roles to the new Domain controller (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324801 applies also for 2008) - you can see in the event viewer (Directory service) that the roles are transferred, also give it some time - reconfigure the DNS configuration on your NIC of the 2008 server, preferred DNS itself, secondary the old one - if you use DHCP do not forget to reconfigure the scope settings to point to the new installed DNS server - export and import of DHCP database for 2008 choose "netshell dhcp backup" and "netshell dhcp restore" command (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc772372.aspx) For printer migration see here: http://trycatch.be/blogs/roggenk/arc...olidation.aspx (works also for 2000 if you follow the article) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc722360.aspx Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. ** Please do NOT email, only reply to Newsgroups ** HELP us help YOU!!! http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/mul_crss.htm > Hi, > > I need help of how to migrate my 2000 Domain to 2008 Domain here is > the network: > > 1- First Physical server with Windows 2000 Server ( AD, DNS, DHCP, > Server ) > 2- Second Physical Server with Windows 2003 and Exchange installed > 3- Third Physical server with New windows 2008 Server installed. > We would like to move the domain from 2000 Server to the new 2008 > server, so the new server will be the domain controller ( 2008 ), > moving all roles ( DHCP, DNS, Print ) > > Also we need to connect the Exchange server to the new 2008 Server > domain. > > Thanks > |
