| Group Policy Drive Mapping Win2k DC, XP SP3 Client - Not working
Win2k SP4 DC, XP Pro SP3 clients. My first try at using GP is to map network drives using the computer configuration. I also want to disconnect them when the system is shut down. I believe I have set up the group policy correctly using a .bat script "attached" to an OU. However, nothing is getting mapped on the client. When I run gpreport on the client it lists the new policy in addition to the domain default. I also get a message on the client during logoff (generally) saying it cannot find the script. It's a long message I have not been able to capture, however, it starts with /idlist; :256:1676 followed by the domain name and then followed by the correct location. I ran adsiedit on the DC and from what I can tell the script location is correct on the DC. My research found some material saying that with XP clients you had to create the policy on the XP system due newer client side extensions. I tried going into the XP computer policy but got access denied everywhere. I was really lost at this point so perhaps I did not do something correctly. Can someone please help me figure out where I've gone wrong in all this? Thanks for all help. |

Hello Diane, GPO's have to be linked to OU's that contains the user or computer accounts, that's correct. Also check ing if the policy is applied is fine. So both work works, except your configuration. So please post the script content you use, i assume it is set as startup/shutdown script? Hello Meinolf, Thank you very much for your reply. Following is the very simple content of one of my .bat files: net use b: "\\cmacas2\Bestcase" /persistent:yes I have run the script "manually" and the drive was mapped correctly. Is there something else I need to do on the XP client that I have missed? Thanks Again, Diane "Meinolf Weber [MVP-DS]" wrote: > Hello Diane, > > GPO's have to be linked to OU's that contains the user or computer accounts, > that's correct. Hello Diane, As far as i know drive letter B is reserved for floppy disk drive. Did you run the command from the client machine when you are logged in? It should work without problem, when testing it manual. The script should be located within the policy itself, not sure how you have stored it. From the little you mentioned it gives me the impression it is stored on your c drive . It should be stored at something like below: \\yourdomain.com\SYSVOL\yourdomain.com\Policies\{1A979A67-E715-4897-85F6-F7C7947DE64F}\Machine\Scripts Yours will definitely be different but make sure it isn't stored at something like: \\mydc\mydcshare\myscripts\ -- Paul Bergson MVP - Directory Services MCTS, MCT, MCSE, MCSA, Security+, BS CSci 2008, 2003, 2000 (Early Achiever), NT4 http://www.pbbergs.com Please no e-mails, any questions should be posted in the NewsGroup This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. Replying to all - I tested the script on the client XP Pro system. It worked fine. No Vista involved. It is a computer configuration, Windows Startup. The location of the script in the policy is: \\benham.com\SysVol\benham.com\Policies\{294C2903-0BE7-419B-B5CB-45B92E439959}\Machine\Scripts\Startup I have restarted the system and shut it down completely and restarted but no luck. Is net use only a user command???? Thanks everyone, your suggestions and questions are much needed. I forget to mention, yes the user has access to the share. The a: drive is reserved for the floppy. Thanks! "Diane" wrote: > Replying to all - > > I tested the script on the client XP Pro system. Ok this is much clearer. You map drives to users not computers. This startup script should be run on the user side of the gpo, right now it is run in the startup script of the computer. -- Paul Bergson MVP - Directory Services MCTS, MCT, MCSE, MCSA, Security+, BS CSci 2008, 2003, 2000 (Early Achiever), NT4 http://www.pbbergs.com Please no e-mails, any questions should be posted in the NewsGroup This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. Well, I sure missed on that one. Thank you all very much for your replies to get me going in the right direction. Thanks Paul - straightforward enough.
