Cannot join the domain using VPN connection

I am using a DC with Exchange 2003 and DNS and AD on a single box that is available using VPN connection only. After connecting via VPN from another Windows 2003 machine that gets the dynamic address using DHCP, which is on a different subnet, I am trying to join the domain but it will always give me error message that states "The domain controller for the domain xxx.com can not be contacted. Ensure that the domain name is typed correctly... ". I have already put the server as preferred DNS in my network connection details and I am able to ping the server as well. Is there anyone who can tell me how to join domain in such situation? Thanks.

You should not do this with a VPN client connection, you can do it easily when you have hot a WAN link via VPN. But I dont understand what exactly you are trying to join to the domain and for what purpose?
