| Migrating local profiles to AD profile
Using Windows 2003 Servers for DC, XP, 2000,& Vista Clients We are migrating from a non-AD configuration to an AD configuration for hundreds of users. To ease the transition for our users we would like to move local account files & settings to the new AD profile on each workstation. I came across a Microsoft tool called Active Directory Migration Tool v3.1 that appears to do this but it only seems to work with Windows 2008 which we do not have. There does not seem to be a version on the Microsoft site that works with Windows Server 2003. Any suggestions on how to best proceed? Thanks Pali |

ADMT is for domains and the migration of user and computer accounts between them - if I understand you correct, you're trying to get the user data to the domain machines, correct? Not sure if USMT does that, but it sure is a thing to try: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb457090.aspx cheers, Florian -- Microsoft MVP - Group Policy eMail: prename [at] frickelsoft [dot] net. blog: http://www.frickelsoft.net/blog. | RE: Migrating local profiles to AD profile ADMT is for migrating from one domain to another. It does not migrate local users to domain users therefore will not be able to translate the profiles of local users to their new domain accounts. It has no way of mapping between local user accounts and the new AD user accounts. The only two options I have used in the past are both fairly manual. One, after logging on and off at least once with the new AD user use the Copy Profile option under the Advanced tab of System Properties on each PC. Two, again after logging on and off at least once with the new AD user go to this Registry Key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\ProfileList. Find the SID of the new AD user. Change the Registry String ProfileImagePath to the path of the old users profile (The AD user must have Full Control permission of the local users Documents and Settings folder first). This then points the new AD user to the old profile. I appreciate neither of these are really suitable if you have large amounts of users to migrate but it might give you some ideas. Sorry couldn't be more help. Hopefully someone else may post a more suitable solution. If you are looking to migrate profiles, have a look at DMA from NetIQ. Use ProfWiz from Forensit, - it exactly does what you are looking for with complete ease and transparency. it can be run in a machine startp or logon vbscript. All others tools are too complicated and time consuming . http://www.forensit.com/Profwiz/index.htm "pali" <palibotlibot@gmail.com> wrote in message news:f12c91af-fdf7-4402-943b-b71e2050aedc@40g2000prx.googlegroups.com... > Using Windows 2003 Servers for DC, XP, 2000,& Vista Clients > > We are migrating from a non-AD configuration to an AD configuration > for hundreds of users.
