Re: Windows 2003 domain controller

Hi Alex,

You need elaborate when you say the upgrade is not working. What error(s)
are you receiving?

An upgrade from Windows 2000 Server to Windows Server 2003 on a domain
controller needs to be preceeded by a number of steps, for example preparing
the existing environment for WS03 AD. You should review the following KB and
build an upgrade plan: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325379

You only mention Windows 2000 Server on the domain controller; not member
servers. If you are planning to format and install WS03 on the existing
domain controller, and it is your only DC, you will lose your AD forest.
This will have an impact on all of your member servers and any applications
and services that use AD DS for authentication and/or authorization. You
will need to remove every member server and member computer from AD before
you "format and reinstall." Bottom line, you're going down the wrong path
with your plan.

Review the link to the KB I provided above. Prepare the existing environment
for WS03. Decide whether to upgrade the existing DC to WS03 or add a new
WS03 DC to your forest.

Re: Windows 2003 domain controller

Hello Alexyy,

What is not working when you try to upgrade, please post the complete error
message. How many DC's do you have? If only one do NOT format it, you loose
the complete domain. Also give some info about applications running on the
DC you like to upgrade.

The easiest way is always to add an additional member server to the domain
and promote it to DC, then make it GC/DNS server and move the 5 FSMO roles
to it. If you have check with diagnostic tools, dcdiag /v, netdiag /v and
repadmin /showrepl for errors you can start with demoting old DC's if needed.
At lesat you should have 2 DC/DNS/GC in your domain for redundancy and failover.

Best regards
