Windows 2008 Print Server GPO Problem

I have a Windows 2008 domain, a Print Server Windows 2008 and Windows XP SP3
client.
I have 2 printers published in my Print Server.
In Print Management I deploy the printers by GPO to my Users in Users OU.
When I log on in the Windows XP SP3 machine, the printers don´t appears.
I have applied another policy, like hide IE icon, and it works.
I run RSOP but the printer policy doesn´t appear.
I have used a script to connect a printer and it worked by GPO.

Anyone can help me, please?
Is that a Windows 2008 bug?

Are you using scripts or the new Group Policy Preferences?

If you are using the preferences, have you installed the Client Side
extensions on XP?

I am using GPO.
I have installed the Client Side Extension but it is not working.
What do you think that the problem is?

If you run gpresult /v on the client see you the policy setting applied?
If it is to long for the command window pipe it to a text file:

gpresult /v >c:\output.txt

Re: Windows 2008 Print Server GPO Problem

the GPO is being applied but the Printer Policy is not.
My Windows XP is 32 bit and my Print Server is 64 bit, the printer driver is
in 64 bit.
Is it possible that is the problem?

Did you actually link the Printer Policy to the right OU? What "policy"
did you use specifically? Is there anything logged in the client's eventlog?

Re: Windows 2008 Print Server GPO Problem

On the server, open the printer properties, sharing tab, click the
"drivers" button, and check wether the print server provides a 32 bit
driver.

yes, I linked in the right OU, in the User OU.
The policy is:
User Configuration -> Preferences -> Control Panel Settings -> Printers

There is no error message in the event viewer.

check to see if there's a 32driver. Also, what "mode"
did you choose to create the printers? "Create"? "Replace"?

I think the problem is with XP sp3 i have been using the print managment console for 3 weeks now from a windows 2003 R2 box, and it has been working fine on all my Windows Xp Sp2 imaged computers. I made a new image with SP3 and the policy shows being applied from gpresults, but the printer is not installed. I am opening a bug ticket with MS. I will provide the results of the ticket as they are made available to me.

Make sure your Xp clients are fully updated with the most recent patches. Miine started working after updating the XP clients, i was not able to determine the exact update. If your using computer based policy make sure you setup a computer security group that the contains all the computers you intend the policy to apply to.

Is your server x64? If so you need to add the x86 drivers in the print server as well. Check the event logs to see if the pushprinterconnections.exe is running or failing. You mentioned it is deploying one printer, what is different about that deployment, Clients OS?

The log file would be in the eventviewer on the client to the effect that the script applied or not, if you setup the pushprinterconnections.exe to log in your GPO it will be located %windir%\temp\ppcMachine.log. I am going based off some w2k3 functions but in printers on the server if you right click in the whitespace there should be an option for server properties. Then you will have the Drivers tab, make sure you have the drivers for your client's OS (XP in your case)

Re: Windows 2008 Print Server GPO Problem

The servers are x86 boxes.. but i do have x64 and x86 drivers.. they
work fine if you double click the printer on an xp machine.. all xps
are x86..

That one printer i think was using a built in 2008 server driver, both
x86 and x64..

Where is the log file exactly.. on one of the 2008 servers
distributing? (IE: a PDC?)

Re: Windows 2008 Print Server GPO Problem

I am using print directory on My Computer or Windows Explorer, To print information about all your files. Print Directory can print the name of every file on a drive, along with the file's size, date and time of last modification, and attributes (Read-Only, Hidden, System and Archive)! And now, the list of files can be sorted by name, size, date.
